Starting from January 1, 2024, parents of a legally insured, sick child up to the age of 12 are entitled to take advantage of children's sick days for 15 working days per child and parent. The entitlement of single parents doubles.
The legally defined entitlement was originally only 10 working days and was temporarily increased to 30 working days due to the corona pandemic. This exception ended at the end of the 2023 calendar year, but the legal entitlement was increased by 5 days with the Nursing Study Strengthening Act of December 15, 2023.
If parents take such days, they receive child sickness benefit amounting to approximately 90% of the lost net wages from their health insurance company.
